Itineraris and excursions » Mule itineraries

The mule itineraries, in association with the Ecomuseo of Valnerina, rediscover the ancient roads; this explains the medieval settlement pattern that unfolded on the hystoric paths, and gives access to a more detailed knowledge of the links between nature and culture.

Mules a re used to catty luggage and food, that can be bought directly from the farmers along the way. The “flavour roads” that show us the typical products, lentils, ham, goat cheese, emmer wheat, truffles, honey, turn into “roads of knowledge” where you can learn about all the traditional trades, from farming to blacksmith? limaro and of carbonaio

A mule is a cross breed between a donkey and a horse, resistant to fatigue and patient. These qualities have favoured it’s use, since the early ages, in transport and agriculture. It was actually the only mean of transport, as even the name given to the roads used by both man and animals at the time says: mule track. The recent improvement in infrastructure has brought, alomg with some environmental impacts, a decline in the use of mules, that are now used in some parts of the Valnerina that are not accessible in any other way.
