| Walk 10 - Connecting
two spots on the Nera, through the Coscerno
Since the age of times, the mountains of the
Coscerno were crossed with paths connecting Spoleto
to Cascia and Monteleone, passing through the
valleys of the Nera and Tessino rivers. In the
XVII century the Pope Urbano VIII commisioned
the “iron road” that, starting from
the roman Flaminia, reached the iron mines of
Monteleone.
Our excursion partially covers these ancient
paths, starting from da Santa Anatolia
di Narco, touching the villages of Caso
and Gavelliand taking you around the Monte Coscerno
(m. 1684). Despite tha ancient path, it is a very
isolated and environmentally interesting area.
The vastoak and forests , the majestic beech forests
and the unusual presence of a pine tree variety
called Pino d'Aleppo, are the perfect frame to
the habitat of thegolden eagle, the Greek partridge,
wild cats and wolves. Along the way we will enjoy
the forest of Valcasana, the valley Piano delle
Melette, the green fields of Gavelli with a little
lake in the middle, the valley of the Tessino,
with the village of Poggiodomo
and it’s fractions, the highland of Monte
dell'Immagine, dotted with rural buildings, pasturelands
and sheep. Our way ends at Vallo di Nera,
one of the most peculiar villages of the Valnerina
where we can enjoy both the intact medieval urban
fabric, and the most genuine products of these
lands.
